Art for the Human Experience
I’m an artist in New England exploring my lived experiences through oil paint, gouache, and other visual mediums. I grew up in the rural Midwest, where I didn’t have the opportunity to take art classes. I taught myself to paint by reading, watching online videos, forming relationships with fellow creatives, and filling my free time with as much art making as possible. I identify as gay, and my art became a safe world for me to explore my developing identities and to process the life unfolding around me.
My paintings explore themes of identity, belonging, awe, trauma, community, sexuality, sensuality, absurdity, environment, and emotion. My artistic development has paralleled my development as a multifaceted human, and through it I reflect upon what it is to navigate the wonders, dualities, and meaningful aspects of existence. Rather than raise questions about life, my art seeks to participate in and capture it fully.
My work has been included in the Windows of Harvard art exhibition (2020) and at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. I received the David McCord prize for showing “unusual creative talent in writing, drama, music, painting, drawing, or sculpture” by Harvard University in 2020. In addition to visual art, I hold a background in music, film-making, and theater. I’ve also had the privilege to work within clinical mental health for several years, where art has been a powerful tool for understanding, expressing, and connecting within the human experience.
I hope you find something of yourself in my work, as I know I’ve encountered myself in the artistic work of so many others.
